Whether you are troubleshooting your email client or setting it up for the first time, these instructions will walk you through an important part of making sure you are successfully sending email with Microsoft or Windows email programs:

Microsoft Outlook® Express

  1. 1. On the Tools menu, click the Accounts option.
  2. 2. On the Internet Accounts panel, click the email tab.
  3. 3. Double-click the account that you wish to edit and select Properties on the right.
  4. 4. On the Advanced tab, find the section for Outgoing email (SMTP) port number.
  5. If the value is 25, then remove and enter the alternate port of 2525 or 587. 
  6. You may need to try both ports before you can successfully send emails.
  7. You have changed your outgoing server port.

Microsoft Outlook® 2003

  1. 1. On the Tools menu, click the Email Accounts option.
  2. 2. On the Email Accounts panel, select the View or change existing email accounts option, then click Next.
  3. 3. Double-click the account that you wish to edit and select Change.
  4. 4. On the Internet Email Settings page, click More Settings.
  5. 5. On the More Settings page, click the Advanced tab.
  6. 6. On the Advanced tab, find the section for Outgoing email (SMTP) port number.
  7. If the value is 25, then remove and enter the alternate port of 2525 or 587.
  8. You may need to try both ports before you can successfully send emails.
  9. You have changed your outgoing server port.

Microsoft Outlook® 2007

  1. 1. On the Tools menu, click the Account Settings option.
  2. 2. On the Email Accounts panel, click the Email tab.
  3. 3. Double-click the account that you wish to edit and select Change.
  4. 4. On the Internet Email Settings page, click More Settings.
  5. 5. On the Advanced tab, find the section for Outgoing email (SMTP) port number.
